Paul is the principal lawyer at Jones & Co. His practice is broadly focused on the national and international distribution of goods and services. Specifically, he practices franchising, licensing, distribution, intellectual property, competition, e-commerce, and privacy law. Paul is familiar with both common law and civil law systems and jurisprudence. In Intellectual Property matters he advises on national and multi-jurisdictional trade-mark and domain name applications and disputes, including counterfeiting matters. He assisted a client in its precedent setting victory in the Supreme Court of Canada in a pharmaceutical patent dispute. He advises on copyright matters including software, entertainment and film matters and on patent disputes, particularly where an abuse of patent rights is alleged. His article on the protection of Chinese character trade-marks was selected by the Director General of the Republic of China (Taipei) Intellectual Property Office for teaching material. He has also been part of American Bar Association task groups reviewing proposed amendments to�专利法 Patent Law) and�商标法 Trademarks Law) of the People's Republic of China.

In Franchising, Licensing and Distribution matters he develops franchise systems and licensing and distribution programs for clients, including preparation of disclosure documents and franchise, license and distribution agreements, and negotiates disputes. He advises many foreign franchisors and licensors expanding into Canada and Canadians and foreign franchisors expanding internationally. He has been consulted by the Governments of Ontario and the People's Republic of China on the preparation of franchise legislation, and has participated in consultations with other governments. His papers on Canadian and Chinese franchise laws are widely used as references and his paper on the effect of China's civil law legal system on the interpretation of the franchise laws, presented to a conference at�北京师范大学珠海 Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai) is used by the former General Counsel to the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China to teach her course on the "Development of China's Legal System" at John Hopkins University.

In Competition and Trade Regulation matters his practice is focused on intellectual property licensing and on distribution matters. He advises on marketing and pricing practices and the interaction between intellectual property law and competition law. He has published his comments on effect of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in Verizon v. Trinko on the relationship of intellectual property to competition law and policy in an American law review and has handled cross-border disputes in this area. He is also experienced in policy matters and obtaining licenses in regulated markets such as alcohol, real estate services and motor vehicle dealerships. In Ontario he obtained substantive policy changes to the liquor license regulations for stadiums for a client.

In Privacy and E-Commerce matters he advises on the development and implementation of compliance policies both for firms and for specific projects in Canada and internationally. He has advised organizations conducting international medical device marketing surveys on privacy compliance in 16 countries and implemented compliance policies in 10 countries. He also handles privacy, data protection disputes and access to information applications and disputes. He is familiar with internet jurisdictional issues. As part of his e-commerce practice he obtained the first internet liquor license in Canada.
